Dumpster Dive for Treasure at ThinkGeek.com!

Dumpster Dive for Treasure at ThinkGeek.com!

The people over at ThinkGeek.com sell some pretty awexome stuff for the Geek in us all!  Obviously, not every product works as expected and some get returned.  ThinkGeek can’t resell it under good conscience, so they end up tossing it!  OH NO!!!  Well after you scale the fence and black out the security cameras, you can literally dive into a …..

Animating Paper

Animating Paper

Nitinol hounts me.

But after several burns, two minor fires, one exploded LED and a fried Arduino UNO I decided to abandon it for now. (Dont ask. I am clumsy some times…)

Instead I stumbled upon a simple but intreaguing origami folding pattern which enables motor actuated animation. I turned it into what will be our final project for coca201. The …..

My CNC Mill

My CNC Mill

Be sure to check out my CNC Mill at the top of the page.  It’s just a photostack and system diagram right now, but it will soon be expanded with details of both the mechanical build and EMC2 tidbits, since most people seem to find the Enhanced Machine Controller to be a bit arcane.

10.2 Ah LiPo Pack

10.2 Ah LiPo Pack

This project came to me around 2006, when the presence of portable, high-capacity battery packs was limited in the U.S market.  I thought it would be helpful to have the equivalent of a single-ended, low voltage lab supply in portable format.  The design restrictions were price, weight and energy density.  I wanted a relatively light, …..

My Greatest Hack Yet

My Greatest Hack Yet

I’ve been exposing my son Malachi to electronics and building things since he was born, and figured it was time to teach him how to solder.  I purchased an electronic kit from a local electronics retailer, Fry’s Electronics.  They sell more electronic components than Radio Shack.  The kit that was selected was the Traffic Light kit… because I thought it …..

Animated Paper

Exploring different techniques of animating paper as well as exploring animated paper as a medium. In particular the use of paper animation as an input device, as well as an output device and as projection surface.

Excursion 1: Hide your Fears (Earth?)Projection on paper animated by Nitinol and activated by proximity. Animation functions as Output

Modified Basic ATOM Nano USB2Serial Adapter

Modified Basic ATOM Nano USB2Serial Adapter

Just a quick post to show how I took the Basic ATOM Nano USB2Serial Adapter and made it breadboard-friendly.

I first removed the female 3-pin header. I then replaced it with 4 pins from a right-angled, breakaway header.

The fourth pin does not connect to any pad. Instead, I soldered a bit of resistor lead to the pin, bent it around …..

JRHackett to Sparkfun adapter

JRHackett to Sparkfun adapter

The Sparkfun FT232RL Breakout board has been a Godsend to me! I can program and power so many micros with it. I started with the Picaxe system, and it is still my favorite. I have used JRHackett’s Picaxe carrier boards for a few years now. They were designed to be used with a serial cable. But now that I have …..

Good Pictures again!

Good Pictures again!

I finally fixed my Nikon Coolpix 5600 battery door. It was similar to Homeschool Dad’s post, but my situation was the tab had broken. I simply used Loctite 416 on a used a thin piece of plastic that I found in my garbage can that I cut away from some project. The nai lfile on a pair of nail clippers …..
